Woodsy PNW Engagement Session – Liz + Justin

First and foremost let me set the record straight, I’m a dog person. Don’t get me wrong cats have their moments but nothing beats the companionship and faithful love of a pup. When Liz and Justin approached me with the idea of incorporating their Golden Retriever Riley into some of their engagement photos I was stoked at the challenge. I must say he was a pretty good boy and didn’t give me much grief!

We shot this session at Point Defiance Park in Tacoma, we did a few shots by the beach and also utilized some of the woods as well as a tree clinging to life on the edge of one of the bluffs facing the Narrows Bridge. We had some excellent light that day and came away with some really nice shots, I also prefer a moodier look and the dying light and woodsy vibes really helped me acheive that. It’s always great to work with folks who don’t mind showing some love in front of the camera, I try my hardest to make my sessions comfortable and relaxing so people can be themselves while we’re together.

This was one of my first shoots with a new piece of equipment and it was really nice to have the chance to test it out on a real shoot. The Nikon 35mm 1.4 is a totally different monster in comparison with the also lovely Sigma 35mm 1.4 ART lens. The tones are smoother on the Nikon and it isn’t as contrasty and sterile looking, this lens has a lot more character to it.

Tacoma Motorcycle Lifestyle Portraits – Anthony

I met up with my main dude Anthony in Downtown Tacoma to do a lifestyle portrait shoot of him and his motorcycle (HD Sportster 1200 if you care). Anthony and I have been friends for many years now, we met in the local music scene in Kitsap Co. where we both hail from. We’ve been in bands together, toured together and have shared many laughs and memories together. The type of friend you never tire of being around is a friend for life.

Tacoma is such a contrasting city. On one side of town we have a massive a lush green park that is the second largest urban park in the United states (only second to Central Park in NYC) and Downtown we have skyscrapers that edge up next to completely vacant lots full of tall grass. The Port of Tacoma provides another contrast in the form of real dirt and grit, old buildings, bumpy concrete and lots of textures. I enjoy shooting with these elements in mind.

This session took place in the early hours of the morning and I shot a mix of digital and film. I was primarily focused on a specific look which consisted of my 35mm 1.4 lens and my 85mm 1.4 lens (really wanted that background compression with the bridge and skyline in the background). We got some really cool shots out of this and I absolutely love the motion we caught with the burnout shots.

    Tacoma Portrait Session – Taylor

Taylor is a fellow Kitsap Co. expatriate like myself. Albeit she just recently moved to Tacoma. She has always been a photographer as long as I’ve known her and I certainly enjoy sharing my passion for photography with others. Taylor shoots mostly film and she has a nice collection of vintage cameras. We met up one a cold winter morning and did some portraits in Tacoma’s biggest and best park, Point Defiance! Taylor has very unique and eclectic style so it was fun to shoot some details of the gear she brought with her as well as the finishes on her outfit. We drank coffee, talked shop and talked shit! My kind of session!

Downtown Tacoma Portrait Session – Lindsay

I met up with Lindsay in Downtown Tacoma for a portrait session and was treated to conversation and many laughs from this awesome lady. Lindsay is a bit of a fashionista, she swoons over Italian shoes and designer jackets and accessories. She has killer style and dreams of becoming a professional fashion stylist, she didn’t diss my outfit so I must be doing okay.

Tacoma has a lot of rustic and industrial vibes due to the history of the City and the Port of Tacoma. This can make creating softer images rather difficult as there are many dark colors and harsh edges to worry about but I think we nailed it.

Get out there and make images with your friends.

East Tacoma Portrait Session – Alex

On the outskirts of East Tacoma there is a creek that runs through the woods and leads up to what looks like an old neighborhood in the middle of the woods with no homes. Just empty lots surrounded by trees with a road running through in short city blocks.

Alex is a Tacoma based creator/activist/entrepreneur who is the man behind PolyRev and half of the team behind streetwear shop Thunderdome located in local all-ages music venue Real Art. Alex has made several excursions to the Standing Rock reservation on the frontline of the resistance against the DAPL project.

It’s always cool to meet new people and spend a few hours shooting the breeze and just learning a new perspective. It’s how we grow. Keep your ears and your minds open, and your ass will follow.

          Discovery Park Portraits – Kenzy

Kenzy is a local fashion blogger based out of Seattle, WA. She posts regularly on her blog and on Instagram and she has great style and a lovely smile to accessorize that style with. Her focus is generally on affordable fashion. We set up a shoot at Discovery Park to showcase some of her outfits and also capture some personality in those looks. Discovery Park is a great location and a wonderful park in general, very large with a mix of settings that allows different looks depending on where you’re shooting,

It was a murky overcast day which provided some nice light, albeit not as directional or warm as I typically look for.
