UW Arboretum Engagement – James + Alessandra

James and Alessandra met each other while they were both attending the University of Washington in Seattle. So we chose a location that was near to their hearts, this is their UW arboretum engagement session.

I’ve known these two for a few years and I was quite pleased to shoot their engagement and also their wedding. James is currently serving in the Air Force and is stationed in Colorado although his home and family reside in WA. Alessandra is originally from Wisconsin but spent the last few years living in WA before moving to Colorado to be closer to James.

These two are total goofs and they play off of each other a lot. Great senses of humor and gorgeous smiles make my job a whole lot easier! It’s interesting shooting with people you know as opposed to those you might not know that well. The biggest difference comes in the warm up period, every photographer can tell you that the first few minutes or even first 20 minutes of a session is generally not the best because your subject isn’t totally comfortable with the situation yet. When you know the subject then that flies out the window and you can just get to work!

I really loved working on this session and I think we came away with some great shots. This park is incredible and quite large with some interesting features surrounding it; including Lake Washington and a kayakers paradise of small inlets and areas to explore.

Mt Rainier Elopement – Brittany + Jesse

Marriage is special. We all know that. But there’s something even more special about two people taking their passion and love for the outdoors and fusing that with their passion and love for one another. Brittany and Jesse embody that spirit. They approached me to shoot their Mt Rainier elopement and I was thrilled with the idea, this was the first elopement I had the chance to shoot and I jumped on it.

I share a love for the outdoors and love for the Northwest just like these two do. They are transplants, coming from the eastern side of the country and they’ve lived a few places yet none of them have felt quite like home the way Washington does. This is a feeling that strikes me to the core. I haven’t lived anywhere besides Washington but I’ve toured parts of the country (and Canada) and I’ve never found a place that feels like the Northwest. It’s a special place.

This elopement took place near the Longmire Lodge, which is the lowest elevation lodge on the mountain. We wanted to avoid snow and we did that very easily. In fact this was a very warm day for early May, which we were quite gracious of!

The spot Brittany and Jesse chose for the ceremony was amongst very tall old growth cedars and next to a babbling creek. Many thanks to Carla the officiant who hiked in with us and gave a beautiful “ceremony” in the woods!

Dane’s Senior Session – Seattle Portrait Photographer

I recently did some senior photos for Dane. Dane is graduating from Bishop Blanchet and he has an interest in videography and broadcasting that he will be pursuing in his continued education.

This was a fun shoot. Dane’s mom wanted to feature his Volvo and she also had this wacky idea of having him eat a big slice of pie. Sounds crazy but I’ll be damned if it turn out pretty cool!

We shot in and around Belltown in Seattle and some of these photos feature the Olympic Sculpture Park as well as the Space Needle.

P.S. The monstrous slice of pie came from La Toscanella Italian Bakery in South Lake Union and it was incredible!

Neal/Moorea Seal – Seattle Portrait Photographer

I work in Belltown, which is a neighborhood just outside of the Downtown retail core of Seattle. Right next to the shop I work at is this wonderful little boutique called Moorea Seal, they specialize in women’s accessories and fashion. Ever since they opened up I’ve thought to myself “It’d be so rad to do a shoot for them”. Well it finally happened.

The team at Moorea Seal is incredible. Wonderful women who really strive to find awesome jewelry and make a positive impact with their shop. They even donate 7% of their profits to non-profit organizations and are supporters of local artisans. All of which are very good things.

Anyways, on to the shoot! We decided to shoot at the University of Washington Botanical Gardens which are really big greenhouses with different rooms that act as different climates. Desert, tropical, moderate, etc. Really awesome facility and very nice faculty as well! We worked through the different “climates” and changed up the styling every so often so we could incorporate different pieces into the shoot. We also shot a bit outside in the surrounding areas.

I’m really happy with this series of images and I cannot thank our model Neal enough. She was incredible and has the best hair.

Amanda & Cheyenne – Vashon Island Portrait Photographer

I’ve never been to Vashon Island. I don’t think I’m alone though, it seems a lot of people haven’t taken the time to explore this small rural island to the West of Seattle. What’s odd about it is that there are THREE ferry docks that service this island. It can be reach from Tacoma, Seattle and Southworth (Port Orchard). With such ease of access how did I not make this trek sooner?

I had put up a casting call on Instagram a few weeks ago and received a handful of people who were interested. One of which was Amanda, who just so happens to be a very close friend of one of my best friends, Cheyenne. Amanda and chey have known each other since 4th Grade and I think I’ve known Chey since about 2011 or 2012. She’s been one of my ride or die buddies for the past few years (even throughout her long travels to Australia and New Zealand.)

The girls came up with the idea for Vashon Island and I just rolled with it since I knew we would find some cool places to shoot. I hopped in Cheyenne’s car and we took the ferry across and met Amanda on the Island and we got to work swiftly since we had limited daylight. we made stops at Island Center Forest and Point Robison Park as well as minor detours along the way. I shot the majority of these photos with my newest lens; Nikon’s 85mm/1.4 AF-D and a few were shot on my Nikon 17-35mm/2.8 when I wanted some wide shots.

I’m very happy with how this set turned out and I’m blown away at how sharp that 85mm lens is, it’s insane. It also renders colors very nicely as well. Take a look and let me know what you think!
