A relaxed afternoon of music, natural light, and connection at Tacoma’s historic Harmon Lofts
Some portrait sessions are built around a milestone. An engagement, an anniversary, or a major life event. Others are simply an opportunity to slow down and document a season of life together. This session with Kim and James was the latter, and those are often some of my favorites.
We met at the historic Harmon Lofts building in Downtown Tacoma, where the couple lives in a beautiful loft overlooking Pacific Avenue. The space is full of character, with large windows that flood the rooms with natural light and architectural details that hint at the building’s long history. It was the perfect setting for a relaxed afternoon focused on connection rather than an agenda.
One of the reasons I love photographing a Tacoma in-home couples session is that people tend to settle into themselves when they’re in a familiar environment. There’s no pressure to navigate a busy park or pose in front of a crowd. Instead, couples can spend time together in a space that reflects who they are and how they live.
For Kim and James, the session was intentionally simple. They dressed comfortably, made themselves at home, and spent the afternoon together while I documented the moments that unfolded naturally. We wandered through the loft chasing pockets of beautiful light as it moved across the rooms. Some moments were playful and filled with laughter, while others were quiet and intimate.
One of my favorite parts of the afternoon was watching James pick up his guitar and play for Kim. It was one of those small, everyday moments that might seem ordinary at first glance but says so much about a relationship. Sitting together in the soft window light, sharing music and conversation, they were completely at ease with one another. Those are the moments I find myself drawn to as a photographer.
As the session continued, the focus remained on simple gestures and genuine connection. A hand on a shoulder, a shared laugh, a quiet embrace on the couch. Nothing forced or overly posed. Just two people enjoying each other’s company in a place that feels like home.
Sessions like this remind me that meaningful photographs don’t require elaborate plans or dramatic locations. Sometimes all you need is great light, a comfortable space, and two people who genuinely enjoy being together. Kim and James brought the love, the historic loft delivered the light, and together they created the perfect atmosphere for a memorable Tacoma in-home couples session.
