Film of the Month – Tacoma Film Photographer

Recently I purchased and acquired via hand-me-downs some film developing equipment. Most people seem to think you need a darkroom to process black and white film but the opposite is true. You just need a dark place to transfer the film to the developing spools and after that you can do it basically anywhere!

So Alicia and I shot a couple rolls of Kodak Tri-X 400. Tri-X has always been one of my favorite films because even though it is kind of grainy it has very smooth gradients and varying degrees of contrast. When mixed with a variable grade black and white paper you can get some really nice tones on your prints.

This post contains shots from two different rolls of film shot on two different cameras. One was shot on my Nikon F100 and the other on my Nikon FA, both equipped with 50mm/1.8 lenses. Theres shots from my daily walk to work in Seattle, some from around Tacoma, a few from our cabin trip in Packwood and a couple from my portrait session with Susie Developed at home and scanned by the great people at The Find Lab in UT.

Golden Gardens Engagement – Kelsey + Carter

I can’t imagine a better way to spend a Valentine’s Day as a photographer. Capturing the love between these two at their Golden Gardens engagement photo session in Seattle, WA.

I’ve known Kelsey almost my whole life. She lived down the street from me when I was growing up. We’ve shared many things together over the years and even though we may have drifted apart into our own lives over the years it never changes the bond that was built so long ago. Carter went to High School with us and he and Kelsey have been somewhat magnetic over the years. Things change and their lives went in different directions but they always came back to each other. They have a special bond as well.

I was really excited to shoot this session and Kelsey and Carter’s wedding as well. Working with people who radiate a positive energy and can smile effortlessly always makes my job easy. We got to explore one of the prettiest parks in the Seattle park system; Golden Gardens on the shore on the Puget Sound in the Ballard neighborhood.

Engagement sessions are great because it really gives the photographer a pre-game to your wedding. It provides an opportunity to better know the couple you’re working with and to build a rapport that will carry on through to their wedding day.

I hope you enjoy looking at their Golden Gardens engagement as much as I enjoyed shooting it!

Film of the Month – Tacoma Film Photographer

My first entry into photography was with film. More specifically black and white film. My father was a hobbyist and he would carry his camera with him at work and also go venture out and about on the weekends and snap some frames here and there. I would accompany him sometimes on these mini photo trips and he taught me the very basics of photography. Not only how to meter manually (which is the crux of many “photographers”) but also basic rules of composition and gear info.

My first camera was a Nikkormat FT. I think I received that on my 16th birthday. Over the next few years I acquired a Nikon F-801, Nikon FA and a Nikon FG. Up until recently the only film body I ever really shot on consistently was my Nikon FA which has stood the test of time. What a great body.

Recently I decided to try and get back into film after predominantly shooting digital for the past 6-8 years. I purchased a used Nikon F100 on ebay and just recently got my first roll of Kodak Portra 400 back from the fine folks at The Find Lab who processed and scanned my negs. I have shots from mine and Alicia’s trip up to a cabin in Packwood as well as some shots around Seattle and Tacoma. Take a look:

Susie – Tacoma Portrait Photographer

I FINALLY got the chance to do a shoot with Susie. She had got ahold of me months ago wanting to do a shoot and we could never make the timing work. I saw a hole in my schedule come up and I asked her if she wanted to make it happen and somehow the stars aligned and voila! Here we are.

We met up in Steilacoom and grabbed a cup of coffee to warm up and get to know each other (a very valuable opportunity, not only for the coffee but also to get to know my subject).

I really wanted to do a shoot down at Chambers Bay so we decided to check it out. What a great place to walk around and shoot, if you can dodge the people that is…

I tried a few new ideas out on this series, take a look:

Lo There Do I See My Brother – Tacoma Music Photographer

Did a quick shoot with my buds in Lo There Do I See My Brother (LTDISMB) on Saturday. They have a new album coming out soon and some tour dates as well in the next few months. I’ve been friends with these guys ever since I moved back to Tacoma in early 2012 and I’ve actually shot some other promos for them before.

Definitely check them out. Spacey, droney, atmospheric and ambient music with some big crescendos and epic moments.
