Volunteer Park Conservatory Wedding, Kelsey + Brad

It’s always interesting how sometimes a professional relationship can extend beyond those means and become a friendship. Such is the case with Kelsey and Brad.

When initially approached to photograph their small wedding at Volunteer Park Conservatory in the upper Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle. I was interested and as I do with all of my clients, I asked them to do a consultation with me. We chose a convenient location of Cloudburst Brewing in Belltown and got down to the business of discussing their wedding desires and plans.

They wanted to have a relaxed pace and focus on what matters most to them while still honoring their families. I think they managed to do it all quite well. The small group all assembled and prepped for the day at the stately Hotel Sorrento on Madison. The entryway/front desk and accompanying dark wood walled bar lend a degree of old school class to this hotel.

I shot the Bride and Groom getting dressed and then Brad and I proceeded down to the Courtyard to await Kelsey for their first look. After which we corralled the family and scooted up to Volunteer Park to tie the knot! It was a overcast day from the start but by the time we were making it up the Hill the weather turned to rain and we were mostly stuck indoors for the duration. Luckily for us there is no less than three different climate zones within the Conservatory so you could just hang out where the humidity was most comfortable.

Dinner was held at Oddfellows Cafe afterwards and I had the pleasure of joining the family for their meal and glad that I did so I could capture their cake cutting!

Dog Portrait in Tacoma, Matt + Gus

My buddy Matt Worthey and his Chocolate Lab Gus came by during a studio day I was hosting in Downtown Tacoma to snap a few photos. I love these studio days because I get to shoot a variety of people throughout the day and the objective of the photo may differ completely.

Dog portraits can be a challenge just as with humans, as all dogs have different personalities. These studio sessions are brief, usually about 20 minutes. So to wrassle a dog into the building and up the stairs, meet a new person and then be expected to be obedient and sit still for a photo presents a challenge not only for the canine but also for master and photographer.

Luckily enough thought Gus is pretty mellow and lazy so he was a breeze to work with, Matt was pretty easy to work with as well; responded well to instruction, and was overall a good boy as well.

Matt has worked as a graphic designer for many years and cut his teeth doing flyers and merch for punk bands. He later worked with Sports Illustrated and now he works for the San Diego Padres. Honeymoon in Disneyland

Our wedding was held on June 30th of 2018. In the fall of 2017 Alicia and her sister both won a raffle held by her sister’s ballet company. The prize was four Disneyland tickets. The deal was made and the tickets divvied up among sisters and our honeymoon plans were sealed.

We wanted to wait a few months after our wedding to do our honeymoon, mostly so we could come off the high we’d been riding for the past year. With so much of our wedding being a DIY affair there was seemingly so calm had in the home for months on end with one project ending and another starting. Alicia is very much of the productive spirit and when she does something it has to be done to the T. Mentally we were both drained and wanted to recoup before traveling.

We went into the vacation planning with a open attitude and not wanting to make it more complicated than need be. We chose to stay within walking distance to the park, and to stay carless and rely on ridesharing. I was confident we would find something to do with our free days and the evenings when we weren’t at the parks.

With only about 10 days to our departure I got the wild inspiration to shoot some Super 8 footage of the trip…only problem being that I had no gear to do this. I scoured ebay and found a early 1970’s Canon 518 camera being sold as-is for only $25 and I decided to risk it and bought it sight unseen. I picked up some film at Glazer’s in Seattle and waited for the box to arrive from ebay. Upon arrival I had to do some hunting for the proper batteries for the metering system of the 518, in the end some gaffer tape wrapped batteries filled up the space that the proper battery would naturally fit but we were up and running at 18fps.

The only other camera equipment I brought on the trip was a Canon AE-1 program and 24mm lens. I brought a few rolls of film but traveled light so as to not distract myself. Pro Tip: Many people fear xrays on their film, this is really only relevant on film rated @ 800iso and above. Anything below that should be safe. No instant/polaroid films should ever go through xray!

We were in the park a total of two days and got to see the sights and ride the rides we wanted to catch. Neither of us had been to the park in over 15 years and quite a few things had changed.

Outside of the park we enjoyed sipping cocktails at Hammer in the Anaheim Packing District and had some tasty food at Healthy Junk. We also traveled to Long Beach on a off day and went to the aquarium ,walked around, scooted around and just enjoyed the day. Another outing was also made to Huntington Beach, we sat in the sand and watched the surfers, walked the pier and made fun of the tackey shirts in a local souvenir shop.

As a vegan in the parks I wasn’t disappointed. By and large we tried to bring in a lunch and eat few meals in the parks to save money. We did buy snacks though and we both ate our fair share of Mickey pretzels and Dole whip. I enjoyed some cauliflower tacos from Rancho Del Zocalo in Disneyland and they were excellent! Happy to report that the michealadas in California Adventure are also excellent.

Watch the video of our trip and enjoy the film snap shots!

Seattle Great Wheel Portrait – Jenette

Jenette and I met a few years back when I did some photos for Moorea Seal, the local women’s boutique she works for. Without knowing it initially we discovered that we float within some of the same circles, namely the hardcore punk scene. It’s nice to have a common ground with your subjects, it certainly helps with conversation and keeping the shoot moving forward and keeping the mood light. For this shoot we met up in the Belltown neighborhood of Seattle and slowly worked our way down to the Seattle waterfront where we concentrated our efforts around the Seattle Great Wheel and the piers surrounding it.

I must admit that my photography style hinges on being in the moment and impromptu. I don’t do a whole lot of preparation prior to these sessions unless I’m going for something really specific. I tell my models to come as they are and wear whatever makes them feel good in their own skin. I want to work with my surroundings and the light to make the shoot unique to itself.

This was my first shoot using the Nikon 58mm/1.4G lens, and if you aren’t familiar with that lens it’s worth checking out. It’s amazing for portraiture, it’s an odd focal length to be sure but it’s easy enough to get used to. The bokeh (the out of focus elements within a photo) is incredibly smooth and soft, the lens handles flaring and backlight like a champ too.

Oddly enough I’ve never actually been on the Seattle Great Wheel. Add that guy to the bucket list I guess!
